Project: The Volcano
Owner: Bishop Museum ( Hawaii)
Designer: Gyroscope ( California)
Client: Maltbie Inc ( New Jersey)
“Overall, I think the approach and execution, both in (Paragon's) facility and on site, was clever and of good quality . I always felt that my project was getting full attention and I never felt uneasy about the overall outcome. (Paragon) did a good job communicating issues and coming up with solutions. Everything was handled very professionally . On site, the whole crew was very energetic and responsive to the job at hand and (the Museum) was quick to praise their workmanship and overall team effort”.
-- Al Darrone, Sr. Project Manager, Maltbie
Profile: Paragon was contracted to provide the “skin” of the volcano. It will be applied to the structural frame being built on-site in Hawaii. After building a scale model, we virtually built the volcano in it's entirety in our shop, including a mock-up of the structural frame.
The skin itself is a mostly-aluminum sheet good that was not intended to be bent and cut and shaped the way we needed it to. But the crew was up to the challenge. After some trial and error – and about 200 saw blades – the sculpted panels were fit and applied to the frame.
The aluminum panels has some rather sharp edges that everyone felt would be unsafe for public. So, Paragon developed a custom-blended, fire-rated elastomer spray coating that covered the sharp edges but didn't ruin the lava-rock aesthetic. |
